Astronomical Research

The research interests of RSAA staff cover the length and breadth of astronomy and astrophysics, ranging from planetary science to cosmology, instrumentation to theory. Some highlights are listed below. M87 simulation

    • Stellar Populations and Evolution: The RSAA has for decades been recognised as one of the world’s major centres for studying the life cycles of stars. The recent completion of the MACHO project, and the discovery of the oldest star in our galaxy have further strengthened our reputation in this field.
    • Instrumentation: the RSAA has an enviable reputation for the design and construction of astronomical instrumentation: work done in partnership with many Australian companies. Recent contracts have included the multi-million dollar NIFS and GSAOI instruments, both under construction for the Gemini Observatory.

    • The Accelerating Universe: RSAA astronomers recently showed that the universe was expanding at an accelerating rate. This totally unexpected result has turned cosmology upside-down over the last few years.
    • Theory: RSAA astronomers lead the world in the modelling of the interstellar medium, of the atmospheres of stars, and in the study of radio jets.
