Helmut Jerjen
Research Interests
Helmut Jerjen is primarily an observational astronomer focussing on the structure and evolution of galaxies in the cosmological context. Research activities involve studies of stellar populations, the atomic hydrogen distribution, and dark matter in dwarf galaxies. Helmut Jerjen is also leading the Stromlo Missing Satellites (SMS) Survey, an international program to search and physically characterise optically elusive Milky Way dwarf satellites predicted by Cold Dark Matter theory. This work is done through data mining 150 Terabytes of CCD images obtained with ANU's SkyMapper, a state-of-the-art surveying telescope. The extensive imaging and spectroscopic follow-up programs of new SMS discoveries offer graduate students the unique opportunity to carry out ground-breaking research in near-field cosmology with the world's largest optical and radio telescopes, and to develop new methods for interpreting the high-quality data obtained from these facilities.
