Scholarships for Study at RSAA

RSAA students can apply for a wide range of scholarships, some specifically created for our students, and these are listed in the table below:


Students who are Co-Supervised by an AAO and/or an ATNF staff member may be eligible for an additional supplementary scholarship of $5000. Please click on the links below to check for eligibility and requirements:

Graduate Scholarships

Alex Rodgers Travelling Scholarship

$6,000

The Alex Rodgers Travelling Scholarship is offered to Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) graduate students for travel abroad of direct relevance to their thesis work. It will not be awarded to fund an overseas observing run. The award is based on scientific merit of the program, benefit of the program to RSAA and the student, and the effective use of the funds from the scholarship.

The stipend is up to $6,000. The committee may decide to award up to two scholarships in any year, depending on available funds. Each award may be divided among a number of deserving candidates. An awardee will receive a one-off payment cleared against receipts to the value of the award.

Requirements: Full-time current RSAA PhD student in any year of their PhD program. A successful applicant is ineligible to apply again. Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; International Students.
Applications will be called for from the enrolled PhD students at RSAA.
Joan Duffield Research Scholarship

The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) offers the Joan Duffield Research Scholarship to one outstanding first year RSAA PhD student.

Eligible Program is PhD.  Maximum duration is three years full-time, with a possible six month extension.

Requirements: Bachelors degree with first class honours or a research Masters degree from a recognised university; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia.
No separate application required – ANU PhD/APA scholarship applicants are automatically considered.
Olin Eggen Research Scholarship

$2,500

Funding for these scholarships is made possible by an endowment setup to commemorate the contributions of the late Professor Olin J Eggen.  Professor Eggen, a native of Wisconsin, USA, was Director of Mt Stromlo Observatory from 1966 through 1977, a period that saw considerable growth and with it the foundation of the high international regard in which the Observatory (now the Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics) is held.

The award provides a supplementary stipend of $2,500 pa tax free to the holder of an ANU PhD scholarship, Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship, or equivalent recognised scholarship. The award may be shared if there are more than one outstanding candidates and may be awarded in addition to other supplementary stipend scholarships.

Maximum duration is three years full-time, with a possible six month extension.

Requirements: Outstanding international students; successful candidates will be of high academic standard and will have already demonstrated a capacity for research in a relevant field.
No separate application is required - international applicants for admission to the RSAA PhD program will be automatically considered by the School scholarships committee for this award.
Research School Of Astronomy And Astrophysics Supplementary Scholarship

A Supplementary Scholarship is extended to all RSAA, (College of Science) PhD students.

Eligible Programs is PhD.  Maximum duration is three years full-time, with a possible six month extension.

Requirements: Bachelors degree with at least upper second-class honours, or a Masters degree with a research component or equivalent; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; International Students.
As this scholarship is awarded to all RSAA PhD students, it is not necessary to complete a separate application form.
Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics Travelling Scholarship

$5 000

Closing Date for Applications:
The RSAA Travelling Scholarship is offered to RSAA graduate students within approximately the last year of their PhD program. Its purpose is to is to further the student's career in astronomy by advertising their research through conference presentations and/or colloquia and/or collaborative visits to astronomical institutions. The scholarship is to cover the cost of airfares, incidental and living expenses and accommodation. An awardee will receive a one-off payment cleared against receipts to the value of the award. Award of this scholarship in any one year is subject to available funds.

A student may hold both the Alex Rodgers and the RSAA Travelling Scholarships in the last year of their program.

In addition to applying for a RSAA Travelling Scholarships, students are encouraged to seek partial funding from other sources, such as the Astronomical Society of Australia and the Vice-Chancellors Travel Grants.



Requirements: Full-time current RSAA PhD student within approximately the last year of their PhD program. Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; International Students.
Applications may be made at any time to the Graduate Conveners.

Applicants should provide a timely, written application setting out a comprehensive program of proposed activities and a budget. The application must be supported by the student's supervisor.
ANU Alumni PhD Scholarships

Each year the University offers up to one scholarship each for nationals of Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

Eligible Program is PhD. Maximum duration is three years full-time with a possible six month extension. Other benefits include travel to Canberra; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance.

Requirements: International students who are nationals of Japan, Malaysia, Thailand or Singapore.
These scholarships are awarded by the Alumni Associations in each country. Relevant information will be put on the Student Recruitment and International Education (SRIE) website.
ANU PhD Mid-Year Entry Scholarships

$22,860

Closing Date for Applications: 31/10
A small number of ANU PhD Scholarships which provide a stipend are funded by Colleges which may be available through mid-year entry or at other times of the year. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis. However, in accordance with strict criteria, the scholarship may be awarded for part-time study. International scholars must undertake study on a full-time basis. It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 August in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to the approval of the prospective supervisor, Head of Department and Dean/Director, a later start date may be possible. The date by which a scholarship must be taken up in a particular instance will be made clear in the formal letter of offer for the scholarship.

Scholarships are available for mid-year entry or at other times of the year; three years full-time with a possible six month extension; available to Australian and New Zealand citizens, and permanent residents of Australia. Other benefits include travel to Canberra; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance.

Requirements: Bachelors degree with at least upper second-class honours, or a Masters degree with a research component or equivalent; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia.

ANU PhD Scholarships

A number of ANU PhD Scholarships which provide a stipend are funded by Colleges.It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis. ANU Tuition Scholarships

Tuition Fees

Closing Date for Applications:
A number of ANU Tuition Scholarships are funded and awarded by individual Colleges and determined as part of the application process. This scholarship covers international student tuition fees.

Eligible Program is PhD. Maximum duration is three years full-time, with two possible six month extensions. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the relevant Graduate Studies Convener or a prospective supervisor, prior to lodging an application, to discuss the proposed research topic and related matters.

Requirements: Bachelors degree with first-class or upper second class honours, or a research Masters degree from a recognised university; International Students.

ANU University Research Scholarships

The University funds a number of scholarships for Doctor of Philosophy or Professional Doctorate by research.

Scholarships available for three years full-time with a possible six-month extension. Other benefits include travel to Canberra; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance.

Requirements:
Bachelors degree with first-class honours, or a research Masters degree from a recognised university; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia; Applicants who are in receipt of a PhD scholarship funded in the University are ineligible.

Bushfire CRC Scholarship Opportunities

up to $28,000 per annum and top-up scholarships (for those eligible for other awards such as APAs) valued at $10,000 per annum

Closing Date for Applications:
Bushfire CRC postgraduate scholarships are available for students pursuing research higher degrees in the bushfire research fields, in line with Bushfire CRC projects. Both Full and Top Up scholarships and project support funding are available for outstanding students, current funding amounts are:

• Full Scholarships of up to $28,000 per annum for three years.
• Top Up scholarships of $10,000 per annum for three years to holders of Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and University Research Scholarships.
• Project Support Funding of up to $5,000 for up to three years (full details of project support funding must be provided).

Requirements: We seek students with strong academic records and relevant experience who are keenly interested in pursuing a PhD with a view to researching key issues for fire and land management agencies around Australia and New Zealand.
Expressions of Interest are invited from students interested in undertaking Masters of PhD studies with backgrounds in science, psychology, social science, botany, ecology, geography, IT, economics, engineering and health sciences.
Indigenous Australian Graduate Scholarships

The Graduate Research School each year normally offers one scholarship to an indigenous Australian to undertake graduate study; three years full-time with a possible extension; applications are only open to Indigenous Australians.

Eligible programs include PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research, MPhil, Professional Doctorate by Coursework (and also Master by Coursework and Research, Master by Coursework, Graduate Diploma).  Maximum duration three years full-time, with a possible extension (PhD).

Requirements: Australian citizens; Permanent residents of Australia. Applications are only open to Indigenous Australians.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

Tuition fee - 3 years

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) are available for study leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy or to a Master of Philosophy and are funded by the Commonwealth Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR). Because competition for the scholarships is intense, at ANU they are not awarded for study at the Master degree level. Successful applicants will study in areas in which the University has shown a particular research concentration.

Requirements: Eligibile programs include PhD or professional Doctorate by research. Applicants must be international students who can demonstrate a bachelors degree with first-class honours, or a research Masters degree from a recognised university.

Malcolm McIntosh Scholarship In The Physical Sciences

This Scholarship is awarded to the highest ranked applicant in the Physical Sciences.

Eligible Program is PhD.  Maximum duration three years full-time, with a possible six month extension.  Other benefits include travel to Canberra from within Australia; reimbursement of some removal expenses; thesis reimbursement allowance.

Requirements: Bachelors degree with first-class honours, or a research Masters degree from a recognised university; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia.
Applicants are selected from amongst Australian Postgraduate Awards or ANU Research Scholarships applicants and do not apply for these scholarships specifically.
Re-entry scholarships for Graduate Research

The University offers each year a small number (usually only one) of Re-entry Scholarships for graduates who wish to resume academic studies after a break of at least three years since formal enrolment in a university program, the break normally being due to fulfillment of family obligations.

Eligible programs include PhD, Professional Doctorate by Research, MPhil.  Maximum duration for PhD or Professional Doctorate three years with a possible six-month extension; for MPhil one year with a possible extension of up to a further twelve months.

Requirements: Bachelors degree with at least upper second-class honours, or a Masters degree with a research component or equivalent; Australian and New Zealand citizens; Permanent residents of Australia.

The University House funds a small number (up to two) of scholarships for Doctor of Philosophy or Professional Doctorate by research.
