Some progress was made identifying suitable
guide stars for potential NIFS targets. Assistance will be available during
December to continue this investigation.
This monthly report on
NIFS activities covers the five week period from 30 October to 1 December2000.
Just before the end of
the reporting period, it was announced that the NIFS contract had finally been
formally executed. RSAA will now continue procurement for the NIRI duplication
work.
The continuing
non-availability of NIRI as-built documentation hampers progress on CC and IS
software development, control system design and procurement, and cryostat and
OIWFS duplication.
There have been no
further developments in the search for competent mechanical design staff.
An electronics
technical officer vacancy still exists. We are also exploring the possibilities
for filling the temporary position to allow the fabrication of the NIFS control
system.
The flip mirror
assembly design has been completed. Design of the system from pick-up mirror to
slicer has been completed. These designs have to be integrated with the overall
system design.
The mechanical
workshop has continued to fabricate components for the NIRI duplication. The
design modifications for the fixed OIWFS detector mount have been revised. The
OIWFS optable machining is ready to be ordered. The OIWFS lenses have been
ordered from Janos.
More quotes have been
received for the control system hardware. Some still remain outstanding.
Purchasing is ready to be commenced.
There has been no
worthwhile progress with the CC and DC software, due to other scheduled
commitments.
The design of the
detector mounting board has been revised. Experiments at IfA indicate that the
detector bus output cannot drive the amplifiers we intended to use with the
settling time that is required. Klaus Hodapp suggests the use of J270 JFETs,
which will require tighter control of amplifier temperature. A liquid nitrogen
dewar was fitted with some parts to assess temperature control performance of
the Lakeshore controller under various circumstances. The dewar had a leak and
did not hold vacuum long enough to do any sensible experiments. The fittings
were transplanted to another dewar, but further experiments have not yet taken
place.
The schedule will
undergo thorough revision in preparation for CDR.

The current schedule
is the schedule included in the “NIFS Revised Costing”. A schedule revised for
the expected delivery dates of the detectors and the late start on cryostat and
OIWFS duplication was developed. It also takes into account the proposed
delayed CDR. This revised schedule was submitted during September 2000. The
schedule will be revised again and the new schedule will be presented in the
CDR documentation.
20 people have
contributed to the NIFS project during this period. They worked a total of 1342
hours, bringing the total for the project to 6383 hrs, which represents
approximately 21.0 % of the total number of hours in the current project plan.
Listed below are the milestones defined in the NIFS contract. No
milestones were due during the reporting period.

of the reporting period. On 1 December 2000 the rate was 0.528.
No income was gained
during the reporting period.
The NIFS account was
charged for 1260 hrs of work from 30 October to 1 December 2000. This is the

The only technical
problem impeding project progress is the unavailability of as-built information
on NIRI and its control software and examples of manuals and plans.
The purchase and
delivery of items on the critical path of the project may be delayed because of
the delayed execution of the NIFS contract and other delays caused by it.
With the signing of
the NIFS contract, the financial problems have been solved.
