Social Events and Activities

This is the program of social activities for attendees of IAU209. Please note that only the welcome reception is included in the conference registration fee, all other events are extra and must be reserved when you register for the conference.

  • Sunday 18 November: IAU 209 Welcome Reception
    Venue: The Canberra Business Promotion Centre, Regatta Point overlooking Lake Burley Griffin.

    Generously hosted by the ACT Government, the event from 6pm to 8pm, locally-produced wines and cocktail food will be served.

    Event included in conference registration.

  • Tuesday 20 November : Wine Tasting
    Venue: The Red Belly Black Cafe at Mount Stromlo Observatory.

    This evening will sample many local wines, each introduced by RSAA connoisseurs. Simple food will also be served. Prior to the wine tasting there will be an opportunity to view the RSAA telescopes (74-inch and 50-inch) and purchase items in the Starwares shop.

    Wine tasting $45 per person.

  • Wednesday 21 November : Afternoon visit to Tidbinbilla Nature Park
    Tidbinbilla is a protected nature reserve where you can see kangaroos, koalas, parrots and wildfowl in the wild. Groups of about 30 will each be guided around the enclosures by Tidbinbilla Park Rangers. Wear walking shoes. There is a shop at the main entrance.

    Tidbinbilla trip $35 per person.

  • Wednesday 21 November : Afternoon visit to Bungendore and horse-treking
    Bungendore is a historic village about 40 kms from Canberra. It has many craft shops, the best of which is a world-class woodworks gallery. The afternoon concludes with Devonshire tea at Elmslea Homestead.

    Horse trekking is also possible from Bungendore (1.5 hours).

    Bungendore trip $35 per person, horse trekking additional $25.

  • Thursday 22 November : Conference Dinner
    Venue: University House, ANU Campus. Drinks at 6.30pm. $75 per person.

This is the program of social activities for those accompanying attendees to IAU209. Please note that only the welcome reception is included in the registration fee, all other events are extra and must be reserved when you register for the conference.

Please note that there are minimum numbers required for each of the Idol Moments tours. Confirmation as to the status of the tour will be notified to participants as soon as registrations have closed.

  • Monday 19 November : Heart of the Nation Tour with Idol Moments
    Fully-guided day tour (10am to 4pm) includes lunch with wine and all entry fees. Coach tours the main sights of the capital city, stopping at the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery.

    Monday day tour $85 per person.

  • Tuesday 20 November : Canberra, A City in the Country Tour with Idol Moments
    Fully-guided morning tour (10.30 am to 2.30pm) visits Lanyon homestead and historic houses in the Canberra region. Picnic lunch included.

    Tuesday half-day tour $78 per person.

  • Tuesday 20 November : Wine Tasting

  • Thursday 22 November : Conference Dinner
    Venue: University House, ANU Campus. Drinks at 6.30pm. $75 per person.
  • Friday 23 November : Galleries, Gardens & Food Tour with Idol Moments
    Fully-guided day tour (10 am to 4pm) visits gardens and craft galleries in and around Bungendore. Includes morning tea and lunch with wine.

    Friday day tour $89 per person.
