The Third Stromlo Symposium

The Galactic Halo: Bright Stars & Dark Matter

Canberra, Australia, 17-21 August 1998

Second Announcement and Call for Registration

Dear Colleague,

This is the second announcement and call for registration for the Third Stromlo Symposium on "The Galactic Halo - Bright Stars & Dark Matter". The meeting will be held in Canberra, at the Australian Academy of Science - Becker House, on 17-21 August, 1998.

PROGRAM:

Mount Stromlo & Siding Spring Observatories have a long tradition in the investigation of the material which constitutes the halo of the Galaxy. The meeting will celebrate the Observatories' three decades of the study of the halo's luminous component and the more recent five year search for the elusive dark material by the MACHO consortium. At this point the MACHO project is ready to present its mid-term results on the nature of dark matter in the Galaxy's halo, and after thirty years of studies of the luminous component at Stromlo it is appropriate to seek to knit the two together in a physical way.

The Third Stromlo Symposium is in honour of the late Professor Alex Rodgers. Rodgers' work on the kinematics and chemistry of the luminous halo has been capped in recent years by his leadership of the project to rebuild the Great Melbourne Telescope expressly for the MACHO project.

The meeting will be structured around a number of invited presentations together with a smaller number of contributed talks in addition to poster presentations. There will be ample time set aside for discussion and for the viewing of the posters.

The topics to be covered, and the speakers who have agreed to attend the Symposium, include the following:

CONTRIBUTED PAPERS AND POSTERS:

Participants who wish to present a paper in the form of either a poster or a contributed oral presentation should submit an ABSTRACT OF THEIR PROPOSED CONTRIBUTION BEFORE 22 MAY, 1998. The Abstract should be sent to tss-abs@mso.anu.edu.au and should indicate whether an oral or a poster presentation is preferred. The presenting author must be the first author on the Abstract. The number of slots for contributed oral presentations is limited and the Scientific Organizing Committee will decide on which proposed oral presentations will be accepted. Those not accepted will be offered presentation as posters. There is ample space for the posters and they will be displayed for the duration of the meeting. Specific poster viewing sessions are included in the program.

REGISTRATION:

Anyone wishing to attend the Symposium must complete and return the attached Registration Form by 10 July, 1998. The Registration Fee is A$400 (approx US$270) and payment, in Australian Dollars, must accompany registration. Payment can be in the form of a cheque drawn on an Australian bank (and made out to the Australian National University), a bank draft in Australian Dollars (similarly made out), an International Money Order, or charged to VISA, Mastercard, Bankcard or American Express credit cards. After 10 July, 1998 the registration fee will be A$450.

The registration fee includes lunches and morning and afternoon teas throughout the meeting, refreshments at the poster viewing sessions, return transport from the Conference Hotel to the Academy each day, and a copy of the conference proceedings.

PROCEEDINGS:

The proceedings of the meeting will be published as part of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific's Conference Series. Invited speakers will be allowed a maximum of 10 pages for their contributions, contributed oral presentations will be allowed 4 pages and poster papers 2 pages. The deadline for the receipt of camera-ready manuscripts will be October 23, 1998. Detailed instructions for authors will be contained in the next announcement.

VENUE:

The Scientific Sessions will be held in Becker Hall at the Australian Academy of Science (known locally as "The Dome"). Posters will be displayed in the areas surrounding the Hall which is where morning and afternoon teas, and lunches, will be provided. Any requests for special equipment such as VCRs, etc, should be noted on the registration form. Becker Hall is approximately 20 minutes walk from the Conference Hotel though bus transport will be provided before and after each day's sessions.

ACCOMMODATION:

The majority of the Symposium participants will be accommodated in the "James Court Apartment Hotel" located in the centre of the city (74 Northbourne Avenue, Canberra, ACT 2601, Phone +61 2 6240 1234, FAX +61 2 6240 1235). This consists of one and two bedroom apartments. Each serviced apartment has a lounge (TV, video, FAX) and a fully equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, stove, microwave and dishwasher. Each bedroom has an individual bathroom (with a spa bath) and separate laundry. The hotel also has a gym, a pool, a sauna and a spa and there are a variety of restaurants on the lower levels of the building. Both one bedroom and two bedroom (2 bath room) apartments are available. The costs are A$118 (US$81) per night (one bedroom) and A$66.50 (US$46) per night (one bedroom in a two bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment, both bedrooms occupied) for a minimum 7 night stay, with additional nights on a pro-rata basis. For stays of 6 nights or less, the rates are A$135 (US$93) per night for a one bedroom apartment and A$85 (US$58) per night for one bedroom in a two bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment with both bedrooms occupied (these rates represent a substantial discount on the regular rates of A$205 and A$122.50 per night). Please specify your preferred option on the Registration Form. More expensive (4 star) and cheaper (`backpacker') accommodations are also available within walking distance of the conference venue. On the basis of the information provided in the registration form we will make the appropriate accommodation booking. Payment should be made directly to the hotel when leaving, except for a deposit for one night which is required at time of Registration.

TRAVEL:

Canberra, the National Capital, is situated approximately 250 km south-west of Sydney, the usual port-of-entry for international visitors. There are frequent domestic airline connections between the two cities. Canberra airport is only a few kilometers from the centre of the city and a taxi from the airport to the city centre will cost approximately A$15 (US$10). Overseas participants are reminded that Australia requires a (tourist) visa as a condition of entry for most foreign nationals. Visa applications can be obtained from Australian Consulates and Embassies or through your travel agent. Anyone who has any difficulty obtaining a visa should contact the Local Organizing Committee (tss-loc@mso.anu.edu.au) as soon as possible.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES:

Sunday August 16. This evening there will be an informal reception at the Australian Academy of Science building from 7:30 until 10 pm. Participants will be able to collect their registration materials and mount their poster papers. The cost of this reception is included in the registration fee.

Tuesday August 18. This evening there will be an informal tasting of wines from Australia and New Zealand. The cost of participation in this event will be A$35 (approx US$24) to cover the price of the wines. A modest amount of appropriate food will also be provided, equivalent to a light dinner.

Wednesday August 19. The Scientific Sessions will end at lunchtime on this day to enable participants to relax and enjoy Canberra's many attractions. An organized bus tour will be offerred to the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (see kangaroos, emus and koalas in natural surroundings) and will also visit NASA's Tidbinbilla Tracking Station. The cost for this tour will be A$20 (US$14) per head. Those who might prefer a less structured program may wish to visit the many attractions of Australia's national capital.
