Australia to export nuclear waste

Overseas disposal for nuclear waste

SYDNEY: Storage of nuclear waste at the Lucas Heights reactor site in Sydney's south will cease after an agreement between the local council and federal Science Minister John Moore.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Kevin Schreiber said Mr Moore had signed an agreement saying fuel would not be reprocessed and spent fuel would not be stored at the site.

"For years, spent nuclear fuel rods have been buried in the ground at Lucas Heights because successive governments have failed to find a solution to the waste crisis," Mr Schreiber said.

Mr Moore said negotiations were under way with overseas plants to reprocess the existing rods at the site and any future rods produced.
