MAPPINGS III

Modelling And Prediction in PhotoIonised Nebulae and Gasdynamical Shocks

MAPPINGs III is a general purpose astrophysical plasma modelling code. It is principally intended to predict emission line spectra of medium and low density plasmas subjected to different levels of photionisation and ionization by shockwaves. MAPPINGS III tracks up to 16 atomic species in all stages of ionization, over a useful range of 100 to 100,000,000 K. It treats spherical and plane parallel geometries in equilibrium and time-dependent models.

MAPPINGS III was developed by me during my thesis from earlier codes, principally by Mike Dopita and Luc Binette . I would like to emphasise that MAPPINGS III does not supercede the current version of MAPPINGS being developed and maintained by Luc Binette . The two codes are complementary and each has different strong points. MAPPINGS III handles higher temperatures (and hence faster shock models) while MAPPINGS handles high densities and Lyman alpha transfer in more detail.

MAPPINGS III is useful for computing models of HI and HII regions, planetary nebulae, novae, supernova remnants, Herbig-Haro shocks, active galaxies, the intergalactic medium and the interstellar medium in general. The present version of MAPPINGS III is a large FORTRAN program that runs with a simple TTY interface for historical and portability reasons. It will be (is) freely available to the general scientific community in versions for SUN workstations, Dec Alphas and SGI R4000 and R8000 workstations.
